You are invited to Celebrate the United States 250th in Warrenton, GA!

It began with a shot heard around the world but what about the clandestine happenings: the plans, the missions, the intrigue, the inventions? What about the every day people turned hero? The often unsung hero or the ones that would rather just live out life quietly afterwards.

Events of Warren County wants to celebrate these men and the best place to start is literally in in our own back yard. Warren County is the last residence of

David Bushnell inventor of the Turtle Submersible.

He lived and worked here under the name of Doctor David Bush.

He was a professor at the academy here and was highly regarded.

No one knew he was among the few men that worked along side our founding fathers to defeat the British Navy.

Doctor David Bush was an academic and scholar while David Bushnell was an                                                                           inventor and patriot. Some feel that even in his later years he wasn't as                                                                                     unassuming as he seemed. In the end he passed away quietly in Warrenton                                                                             and was buried in an unmarked grave. Only when the solicitor came to handle his belongings did the townsfolk realize that their beloved Dr. Bush was David Bushnell compatriot of Lafayette, Washington, Jefferson and the others that helped to form our nation.

The inventor David Bushnell was the father of the first submarine used in battle, The Turtle. Named such because of it's

shape resembling two sea-turtle shells hooked together. The Turtle only saw one mission on September 6th 1776. Though not successful in it's mission itself it did serve

to shake the British fleet up enough to have them retreat

out of the harbor.

During the 250th anniversary year of the War for Independence Events of Warren County is celebrating David Bushnell and his Turtle. Our celebration will take place on the anniversary of the launching of the Turtles first mission. This just happens to be Labor Day Weekend 2026.
